Updates on Johor this week
ISKANDAR PUTERI, Nov 21 - Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced key initiatives in the Johor Budget 2025, including a two-month salary incentive for state-paid civil servants and RM18.1 million to double allowances for mosque and surau officials, with a one-off RM500 payment planned for March. The Johor Super Lane (JSL) will streamline business processes in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, cutting land development approval times. Additional plans include RM1.8 million for COVID-19 orphans, 8,021 affordable homes, and the launch of the Maju Johor 2030 website to update citizens on state initiatives. Incentives were also awarded to Johor athletes excelling in the 2024 Paris Olympics and Sukma Sarawak Games.
ISKANDAR PUTERI, Nov 21 - Johor will extend the Friday rest period to two hours from January 1, 2025, coinciding with the change of weekend holidays to Saturday and Sunday. Announced by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi during the Johor Budget 2025, the adjustment aims to provide Muslim employees ample time for Friday prayers. The change, approved by Sultan Ibrahim and supported by the Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ), affects public and private sectors, including 587,343 students and nearly 2 million employees. Plans include increasing school suraus and improving government service delivery, with potential consideration for a four-and-a-half-day work week in the future.
JOHOR BAHRU, Nov 21 - Forest City’s plans to become a hub for family offices in its Johor special financial zone (SFZ) are advancing, with incentives and criteria to be announced in early 2025, said Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan. Targeting a different market than Singapore, the SFZ offers lower entry thresholds (RM30 million in assets) and a 0% tax rate to attract ultra-high-net-worth families and foreign investment. While the initiative has gained strong interest from wealth management firms, experts stress the need for robust advisory and fund management services. The project, led by Country Garden, aims to spur Johor’s economy, create high-quality jobs, and address brain drain challenges.
