The Story of Heritage Salahuddin Bakery Shop

Salahuddin Bakery is a renowned traditional Halal bake shop that is situated on Jalan Dhoby in the heart of downtown Johor Bahru. This bakery has been in existence since 1937 and was founded by Shariff Mohamed Mahku, who hailed from New Delhi. Currently, the bakery is in its third generation of ownership. It is worth noting that the bakery still uses a room-size wood-fired oven to bake their pastries, which is a testament to their commitment to preserving traditional baking methods.

It is interesting to note that in the past, there were around 10 people in Johor Bahru who used traditional giant wood-fired ovens, but today, only two remain - Salahuddin Bakery and Hiap Joo. Salahuddin Bakery offers a wide variety of traditional breads and pastries, including some that are rarely seen elsewhere nowadays. It is not easy to see something modern in this very traditional bakery. Apart from breads, coconut buns, and cakes that are wood-fired in an old oven at the back of the shop, a wide range of traditional pastries are also freshly made at the bakery daily. For example, they have traditional flaky cream cones or cannoli, which are a childhood memory for many people in Johor or Singapore. They also sell traditional curry puffs, which are filled with curried potato with chicken or lamb in flaky, layered pockets.

Salahuddin Bakery's products are baked overnight and are ready for sale when it opens its doors at 9 am daily. The bakery sells traditional loaves which they wrap in plastic bags.
